My Home Near the Harbor

Looking through my old drawing
books helps me to recall fond memories.
Was a time when I carried my drawing books with
me and they became visual diaries. I tried to capture something
every day with my pens and watercolors ...
I was finding my way on my own as a wandering artist.

It was in the autumn when I had moved from Boston
to Marblehead...

a little room on the 2nd floor of an old house with
slanting floors in an apartment I shared with two
others and a cat belonging to one of them named Aboo.
I recall that the man who lived above us grew vegetables on the
roof of the the house and buckets of
dirt could be see through our kitchen window being
hoisted up to the roof!

"Aboo"

It was on a street in the Old Town between the harbor
at the bottom of the street

and the shops at the top.

Perusing My Old Drawing Books

This seemed like a good afternoon to
take some of my old drawing books out of
their special storage box
and browse through them...
I was joined by my cat, Brody.

Looking back, while I was living in Boston,
I kept a visual journal of my city
experiences with my pen & ink and
watercolors. Every day my drawing book came along
with me wherever I went
just as my camera is with me these days!

Brody has taken a great interest in my old drawing books
and has seemed to claim the ones
of Marblehead below.

The summer before I moved to Marblehead,
a friend who knew how much I wanted to live
near the sea would drive up to the North Shore
of Boston with me to help me find a place to rent...
visiting Rockport, Lanesville, Gloucester,
Magnolia and Marblehead and capturing each place
in my drawing books. At the time I really didn't know
where I would end up or how I was to survive as a
young starving artist!

A Special Time and Place

My love of the sea led me to Marblehead,
a small, quaint, historic seacoast town
on the North Shore of Boston when I was a
young artist who had been living in the city of
Boston after graduating from college in the country.
This blog will be a recollection of that special time
through my art and drawing books and stories of
my love for Marblehead and the people I met.
